Washington D.C.

BY ANNIE BLACK

I recently traveled to our nation’s capital, Washington DC. The sites to see were amazing, the people were all so kind, and the food was wonderful. If you’re looking to plan a trip to DC, there are some things you should put at the top of your to do list while you are there.

When you arrive in DC, start with the National Mall. The long grassy stretch of land is home to historic monuments such as the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, which can be seen from any spot in the district. Besides these two well known monuments, the National mall houses the Korean War Veterans Memorial, Thomas Jefferson Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, and the National World War II Memorial.

If you plan your trip for the end of March or beginning of April, your chances of seeing the famous cherry blossoms are very high. At the same time, if you plan your trip for this time of year, the weather forecast could either be the perfect 70 and sunny or more towards the 50’s and a little rainy. But don’t worry, there are still plenty of things to do and see if you don’t want to put up with the rain.

The National Mall is also home to the remarkable Smithsonian museums and many others that are well worth your time and the best part, they’re free. On the mall there is the, National Gallery of Art (my personal favorite), U.S. Botanic Garden, National Air & Space Museum, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, National Museum of Natural History, National Museum of American History, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, National Museum of the American Indian, National Museum of African American History and Culture, U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing,  and the National Archives Museum which holds the United States Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and the Bill of Rights. How cool is it that, as citizens of the United States of America, we are able to see the documents that built our country.

Now for my foodies reading this article, my family and I found some of the best places to grab a bite while in DC. starting with breakfast we had Bethesda Bagels. I got the blueberry bagel and a cinnamon bagel topped with their famous cream cheese. It was so tasty! If you go there for bagels, make sure to pick up a fresh squeezed orange juice while you’re at it.

For lunch, we stopped at Good Stuff Eatery in Georgetown DC. It’s a burger shop known for their amazing fries, milkshakes, and of course burgers. It’s a chain restaurant that was located along Pennsylvania Avenue.

“It was the best burger I have had in a long time. I ordered the sunny side up burger with a toasted marshmallow milkshake and it was delicious. I would definitely go back.” said Melinda Black

For desert we stopped at Georgetown Cupcake. They formally had their own TV show on Food Network. They are known for their amazing cupcakes. We ordered the Salted Caramel, Chocolate Coconut, Carrot Cake, and their world famous Red Velvet cupcake. Whether you have a sweet tooth or not, make sure to add this bakery to your list of places to eat while in DC.

With all the great places to eat, see, and awesome things to do, DC is for sure one of the places you should add to your bucket list of places to visit.
